Theater League’s jazz, blues and comedy hour, 12 O’CLOCK JUMP, hits the Mutual Musicians Foundation each Saturday in August from Midnight to 1 a.m.

Produced and presented by Theater League, 12 O’CLOCK JUMP combines Kansas City’s jazz and blues heritage with songs and performers from the world of jazz as well as sketch and improv comedy.

“It’s sort of like ‘Saturday Night Live’ but with more focus on the music,” said the show’s musical director, Joe Cartwright. “Each week, we celebrate the birthday of a jazz luminary and play some good old Kansas City jazz. Hopefully, our audiences—both live at the Foundation and over the airwaves—will be entertained while they learn a little more about the music.”

For several weeks, the weekly show has been broadcast live each Saturday night from midnight to 1 a.m. on KCUR Radio, 89.3 FM, immediately following Chuck Haddock’s “Fish Fry” program. Admission to the show is free; doors at the Foundation, located at 1823 Highland, open Saturday nights at 11:30 p.m.

Proceeds from food and beverage sales benefit the Mutual Musicians Foundation, which is dedicated to maintaining the historic building—originally Kansas City’s Black Musicians Union headquarters—and the tradition of jazz in Kansas City.

This month’s featured artists include the legendary Louis Armstrong, saxophonist Benny Carter, jazz piano great Oscar Peterson, Count Basie and Charlie Parker.

Each week a special guest host is joined by the 12 O’CLOCK JUMP orchestra (musicians Nedra Dixon, Joe Cartwright, Tyrone Clark and Mike Warren, accompanied by David Basse) as well as the improvisational comedy/jazz stylings of Pearl McDonald and Pete Weber to guide the audience through the night of jazz.

The month of August will feature Lonnie McFadden, Kim Park, Bryan Busby, Will Matthews and Bobby Watson.
